Radiance follows the path of the star as it traverses the sky, rising on the left and setting on the right, spanning a predetermined amount of time.
The rings radiating from the central point react to environmental sounds dynamically increasing noise values attached to the structures. Viewers can interact with the piece by shifting red, green, and blue color values and breaking apart the flat pane into a three dimensional grid. Each cube in the grid is dynamically placed and scales based on treble, mid, and bass tones from the sounds feeding into the system. The viewer is left to experience the entire cycle from start to finish, knowing the experience will be different each time.
Radiance was shown at the Menil Collection in Houston, TX on May 2, 2026 as part of their annual Bring Your Own Beamer event.
Music is for demo purposes only and is not part of the original experience. Track is “Ghosting” by Rival Consoles.
Radiance was built using JavaScript, Three.js, and custom GLSL shaders. A microphone is used to feed environmental sounds into the system where the treble, mid, and bass tones are extracted and feed into the experience. Viewers can make the experience their own by manipulating knobs and pads on a MIDI controller passing values into the system.
